MT 620 Roadheader

The MT 620 is a powerful roadheader designed for operation in the hardest rock formations. It performs exceptionally well both in underground mining and in the excavation of road and railway tunnels.

Thanks to its robust design, high power output, and advanced technical solutions, it operates reliably where other roadheaders are no longer effective. The MT 620 is regarded as one of the most advanced tunnelling roadheaders available on the market.

Operational capabilities of the roadheader

The MT 620 roadheader is a heavy-duty machine designed for operation in extremely demanding conditions. Equipped with a 300 kW cutting head and an advanced telescopic boom, the machine is capable of cutting rock with compressive strength exceeding 120 MPa. It can excavate workings with widths of up to 8.8 m and heights of up to 5.8 m. The roadheader is fitted with water spraying and tool cooling systems, which increase operational safety and reduce cutting tool wear. A proportional hydraulic system ensures optimal power utilization while maintaining energy efficiency.

Where is the MT 620 roadheader used?

The roadheader is used wherever a reliable machine is required for excavation in hard and abrasive rock formations. It is a machine of universal character. The MT 620 is employed in metro construction, tunnel projects, as well as in underground mines for preparatory and development works. Due to its performance, durability, and wide operating range, this tunneling roadheader is successfully used in metal ore mines and hard rock operations, and in theory it may also be applied in potash or salt mines if geological conditions require it.

High power and cutting efficiency

A 300 kW motor enables effective cutting of very hard rock formations (above 120 MPa). With the application of ICUTROC technology, the roadheader operates successfully where other machines fail.

Modular design

The roadheader has been designed for easy assembly and disassembly. Its modular structure enables rapid underground transport and facilitates technical servicing in mining conditions.

  • Automatic lubrication system with dosing to selected service points
  • Cutting head temperature and load monitoring module (e.g. PTC sensors)
  • Advanced control system with PLC operator panel and cutting profile visualization
  • Version with cutting head designed for even harder rock formations
  • Camera system supporting maneuvering and operational monitoring in confined spaces
  • Cutting pick wear sensors and cutting force monitoring
  • Methane detection system with automatic power shut-off in emergency situations (ATEX-compliant)
  • Set of spare cutting tools and additional pick holders
  • Package for operation in highly dusty or wet environments (additional covers, filters, seals)
  • Provision for remote diagnostics and remote service access (optional modem or Ethernet port)

Design and main components of the MT 620

Cutting unit

The most important working assembly of the MT 620 roadheader is the transverse cutting head (type R250WZ-TC50), equipped with 2 × 50 cutting picks. It is designed for operation in rock with compressive strength exceeding 120 MPa. The cutting head is driven by a 300 kW electric motor cooperating with a multi-stage gearbox, ensuring optimal torque utilization and efficient operation in the most demanding conditions. The cutting speed ranges from 1.4 to 2.3 m/s.

Boom and slewing system

The telescopic boom of the MT 620 roadheader is hydraulically stabilized and provides precise control of the cutting head both vertically (+63° / –22°) and horizontally (±45°). The slewing assembly, based on a slewing ring and hydraulic cylinders, enables excavation of workings with varied profiles without the need to reposition the entire machine. This solution results in time savings and increased cutting precision.

Loading system and conveyor

Material detached from the rock mass is transferred onto a wide loading table (4.8–5.12 m), from where it is guided by gathering arms (“paddles”) to a chain conveyor with a capacity of up to 350 m³/h. The entire system is protected with 10 mm thick abrasion-resistant steel, significantly extending its service life. This design allows for smooth handling of even large rock fragments.

Undercarriage and travel drive

The roadheader moves on two independently driven crawler tracks with a width of 600 mm, ensuring stability and maneuverability in narrow workings. The MT 620 can operate on gradients of up to ±18°, and with the use of a hydraulic anchoring system—even up to ±32°. A tractive force of 358 kN enables safe movement even under difficult ground conditions.

Power supply, control, and hydraulics

The machine is powered by a 1000 V / 50 Hz supply, with total installed power ranging from 540 to 555 kW depending on the version. Explosion-proof enclosures compliant with ATEX requirements are applied, along with insulation condition and load monitoring systems. The hydraulic system, based on three independent circuits, ensures precise control of all machine functions—from boom slewing to crawler drive. The total hydraulic system flow rate reaches up to 1300 l/min.
