MR75T – a tunnel roadheader for tunnelling projects

The Minostar MR75T is our response to the requirements of companies involved in tunnel construction and other types of non-mining underground works. The letter “T” in the model designation refers to its tunnelling application and clearly distinguishes the machine from the base version, which is intended primarily for mining operations. The design of the MR75T tunnel roadheader is based on the proven solutions used in the base model. It retains the power of the cutting unit, the cutting head’s working range, the modular design, the muck handling system and the other key technical parameters. The modifications primarily adapt the machine to the specific requirements and environment of tunnelling operations.

The tunnelling version features:

  • an optimised water cooling system that supports safe and efficient machine operation under high loads,
  • a spacious, air-conditioned operator’s cab that provides suitable working conditions during extended operating cycles,
  • solutions that facilitate operation, maintenance and inspection of the key components,
  • the option to adapt the configuration and equipment to the conditions of a specific tunnelling project.

Applications of the MR75T tunnel roadheader

The MR75T is intended for operations that require mechanical rock excavation, an extensive cutting head working range and the efficient handling of substantial volumes of excavated material. It can be used both for new construction projects and for the extension of existing underground infrastructure.

Typical applications of the MR75T include:

  • mechanical tunnel excavation,
  • construction of underground access and transport openings,
  • excavation of adits, galleries and technical openings,
  • construction of infrastructure tunnels,
  • excavation of underground access structures,
  • construction of large cross-section underground openings.

Whether the MR75T is suitable for a particular project depends on factors such as the geometry of the planned excavation, the properties of the rock mass, the required ground support method, the organisation of muck removal and the technical conditions at the construction site. Based on this information, we can prepare a machine configuration tailored to the requirements of the project.

Purpose-built for tunnelling operations

The MR75T is a variant of the Minostar MR75 roadheader intended for the mechanical excavation of tunnels and other underground infrastructure and technical openings. The machine has been adapted for intensive operation and extended working cycles in demanding tunnelling environments.

Cutting rock with a compressive strength of up to 100 MPa

The 200–230 kW cutting head motor enables the efficient excavation of rock with a compressive strength of up to 100 MPa. The MR75T can therefore be used in tunnelling projects involving varied and demanding geological conditions.

Optimised water cooling system

The tunnelling version features an optimised water cooling system that maintains suitable operating temperatures for the key components. The system supports safe and efficient roadheader operation under high loads and during prolonged tunnelling works.

Spacious, air-conditioned operator’s cab

The MR75T is equipped with a spacious, air-conditioned operator’s cab. The enclosed workstation protects the operator from adverse conditions inside the tunnel and improves operating comfort during extended working cycles.

Depending on the customer’s requirements and the intended application, the MR75T can be equipped with additional solutions that extend its capabilities:

  • cutting process visualisation and monitoring system – enables operators to monitor the progress of the work and check the machine’s key operating parameters;
  • wireless remote control – enables the operator to control the roadheader from a position that provides a clear view of the working area and a safe distance from the excavation face;
  • drilling and bolting unit – powered directly by the roadheader’s hydraulic system, it supports drilling and ground support operations.

Operating capabilities of the MR75T

The MR75T tunnel roadheader has been developed for mechanical rock excavation and the construction of large cross-section underground openings. Its design makes it possible to achieve a cutting cross-section of at least 34 m² from a single machine position. The precise geometry of the excavation depends on the cutting head configuration, the positioning of the machine and the conditions of the project. The 200–230 kW cutting head motor enables the machine to work in rock with a compressive strength of up to 100 MPa.

The MR75T can therefore be used for tunnelling through formations in which lighter roadheaders cannot provide sufficient power, stability or cutting performance. Excavated material is collected by a wide loading table working in conjunction with gathering arms and a centrally positioned conveyor.

The material handling system has a maximum capacity of up to 300 m³/h. Efficient muck removal helps maintain continuous operation and reduces the accumulation of material in the cutting head’s working area. The modular design simplifies the transport of individual assemblies to the construction site or into the structure being excavated. It also facilitates assembly, disassembly and access to components during inspections and servicing.

Key advantages of the MR75T

The Minostar MR75T combines the proven performance of the MR75 design with solutions adapted to prolonged tunnelling operations. The machine’s key advantages include:

  • optimised water cooling – supports safe and efficient machine operation in demanding tunnelling environments,
  • spacious, air-conditioned cab – provides comfortable working conditions for the operator during extended operating periods,
  • Load Sensing hydraulics – provides precise control, reduces energy consumption and limits the load placed on individual components,
  • modular design – simplifies the transport, assembly and disassembly of the machine,
  • simplified technical maintenance – convenient access to the components facilitates routine maintenance and servicing,
  • automatic central lubrication – provides a continuous supply of lubricant to the machine’s key lubrication points,
  • anti-collision protection – prevents the cutting boom and loading table from colliding with each other,
  • efficient water spraying system – reduces dust generated during cutting and supports safe operation.

Design and key assemblies of the MR75T tunnel roadheader

Design and main assemblies of the MR75T

The MR75T tunnel roadheader features a modular design that integrates the assemblies responsible for rock cutting, muck collection and transport, machine movement, stabilisation, power supply, cooling and control. The arrangement of the components provides the access required for technical inspections and maintenance work.

Cutting unit

The primary working unit of the MR75T is a transverse cutting head driven by a motor rated from 200 to 230 kW. The system enables the machine to cut rock with a compressive strength of up to 100 MPa and develop large cross-section underground openings. The cutting head drive comprises a water-cooled motor and a gearbox that transmits torque to the cutting head. The cutting head configuration can be adapted to the type of work and the customer’s individual requirements.

Cutting boom and anti-collision protection

The cutting head is mounted on a movable cutting boom whose position is controlled by the hydraulic system. Vertical and horizontal movement allows the head to traverse the excavation face and create the required excavation profile. A hydromechanical anti-collision system prevents contact between the cutting boom and the loading table. The system protects both assemblies when the cutting head operates within the lower section of its working range.

Loading table and muck collection system

Material broken by the cutting head falls onto a hydraulically raised and lowered loading table. Gathering arms direct the muck towards the centrally positioned conveyor. The table can be fitted with extensions that increase the material collection area and allow the system to be adapted to the width of the excavation.

Muck conveyor

The central conveyor collects material from the loading table and transports it to the rear of the machine. From there, the muck can be transferred to the next component of the haulage system. The conveyor has a maximum capacity of up to 300 m³/h. Components exposed to intensive abrasive wear are protected by replaceable wear-resistant plates.

Main frame and stabilisation system

The main frame connects the machine’s key modules and carries the loads generated during cutting. The hydraulic stabilisers help stabilise the roadheader relative to the excavation face and limit unwanted movement caused by cutting forces.

Crawler travel system

The crawler undercarriage is responsible for moving the roadheader and positioning it relative to the excavation face. The large contact area between the crawler tracks and the ground provides sufficient traction and helps reduce specific ground pressure.

Hydraulic system

The MR75T hydraulic system controls the movement of the cutting boom, the position of the loading table, the operation of the stabilisers and the machine’s other mechanisms. The Load Sensing system adapts the hydraulic parameters to current demand, improving control precision and reducing energy losses.

Water cooling system

The optimised water cooling system dissipates heat from the key components of the MR75T. It has been adapted for intensive operation in tunnelling environments, where limited air exchange and extended cutting cycles can increase the machine’s thermal load.

Electrical and control systems

The electrical system supplies power to the drive units, lighting, monitoring equipment and control system. Its configuration is adapted to the power supply parameters and requirements applicable at the project site. The control system enables the operator to manage the roadheader’s key functions and monitor selected operating parameters. The scope of the protective and monitoring functions is defined for each machine configuration.

Operator’s cab

The spacious, air-conditioned cab is one of the most important tunnelling-specific improvements over the MR75 roadheader. It provides the operator with an enclosed workstation, protects them from adverse conditions inside the tunnel and improves operating comfort during prolonged works.
